Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What does a web proxy do?
A: It acts as a go-between, hence the name 'proxy' - on behalf of. When you input a web address into the url box we fetch that websites' content and display it for you. The website you view just sees our server, not your computer. This makes your browsing anonymous. It can also bypass some web filters and firewalls too, unblocking blocked websites.
Q: Are these web proxies legal to use?
A: Yes. They are forbidden in some countries of the world but in the "west" they're perfectly legal. You can check with your local authorities if you need to be sure. Access is blocked for those (and some other) countries where it's not legal.
Q: Are they safe to use?
A: Pretty much. This one is anyway, I can't say about any others though. We're guaranteed free of malware, that's a promise. Good proxies (like this one) can actually make browsing the web safer than not using one at all, because some of the vulnerabilities (javascripts, active-x etc.) are filtered out by the proxy.
This can give you more protection than just using your browser alone, whichever one you use. You should still exercise caution and due diligence though, we can't make you invulnerable or invisible. You are still responsible for your own safety, online or otherwise.
Q: Can I go to any website using a proxy?
A: You can but you shouldn't be using them for anything personal like banking, insurance, buying or selling but they're safe enough for 'normal' use. In fact you're safer in some respects.
Sites that use or require your personal information usually record your visits. If you use a different IP address from normal they might think someone else has access to your account and take measures to restrict it. This can cause more problems than it solves.
Q: Do all websites work through here?
A: Most do, some might need some settings changing like unchecking the 'Remove Scripts' option for instance, others might work better using the 'Lite' or mobile (cell) version of the site. Try different things until you find what works.
Q: Can I get into trouble using a proxy?
A: Only if you use it for something illegal. The same laws apply to you whether you're using a proxy or not, don't be fooled into thinking you can get away with things just because you hide behind us.
Q: Is this 'private'?
A: Only insofar as other websites are concerned, they can't normally see the real you when you're using us, they only see us. However logs are kept and if law enforcement agencies ask we will give those logs over to them if subpoenaed. We can't get you into trouble, only you can do that. We won't knowingly protect criminals or their activities.
Q: Can I be caught?
A: For what? If you do anything illegal then yes you can. If you just want to browse in private, anonymously, then no of course not. We won't tell if you just want to view *cough* *cough* ahem, err you know, 'naughty' (grown ups) websites, that's up to you and your conscience. We can't guarantee anything though.
Q: Can I use these at work/school/uni?
A: If you need to but keep it to break times, don't use us when you should be working or studying, you could get into all kinds of trouble, including losing your internet access and privileges (or worse). Keep it discrete if you must. Use your common sense and you should be OK though.
Q: How does this website work?
A: How does anything work, remember 'google' is your friend. Use a search engine and you'll find out all you need to know about web proxies. It is beyond the scope of this FAQ to go into that much detail here, sorry.
